From scraped knees to cuts in the kitchen, bloody messes are a regular occurrence in most households. Accidents happen, but when that bright red blood stains your favorite shirt or beautiful carpet, it’s essential to act fast. As long as you take care of the bloodstain right away, your chances of removing it are pretty high. But, what is the stain removal process?

To help you get rid of bloodstains on your lovely blouse or carpet, the experts at Sierra Cleaners have created a Beginner’s Guide to removing blood stains at home. Through this guide, we aim to educate you on how to get the job done conveniently.

Getting Started

Gather the materials required: Before getting to the actual task, you must pull together all the cleaning items you’ll need.

Gather:
- 1 cup of lukewarm water
- 1 teaspoon
- any powdered or liquid laundry detergent,
- a clean white towel

Get the cleaning mixture right: Mix 1/2 teaspoon of detergent into a cup of lukewarm water. Allow to dissolve fully.

Apply the solution to the stain. Cover it with a towel and gently tap with a spoon. After a minute, check on the stain. If it’s coming out, go ahead and launder as usual. If it hasn’t moved yet, apply some more of the solution, cover it with a towel, and wait fifteen minutes. If at this point, it hasn’t come out, then an overnight treatment may be required. Otherwise again, launder as required.

(Important Note: This solution should only be used on cotton, polyester, or rayon blends. Always check for colorfastness by applying the solution to a hidden seam first to test. Never use this solution on wools and silks. This method will cause color loss and fiber degradation on these fabrics.)

Next Steps

Be gentle: Use a soft and slow rubbing motion when trying to get the solution into the fabric. Avoid being too rough on the fabric, as this could end up fraying the fabric and destroying your carpet, sheets, or clothes. Remember, you are trying to save the fabric from a bloodstain. Ruining it more won’t do you any good.

Give the product time to work: As you can see from the instructions stated above, this method requires time and care. You can’t just pour the solution onto the fabric and hope it vanishes. This is a homemade method that works, but you have to give the solution time to work on the bloodstain. It is a process that will require patience and effort on your end.
